Wine and Cheese Evening

The wine and cheese evening held on Thursday, 21 November 2002 at the Civic Hall was an outstanding success with around 40 people attending.

Sue and Dave Totterdell provided a selection of wines from a recent visit to France to test the palates of those present. The labels of the bottles were hidden and rounds of tasting organised under the careful control of Sue. The aim was to try and identify the most expensive white and the most expensive red from a choice of 3 of each. A set of notes was provided to inform the tasting. All the wines were delightful and had a range of flavours and aromas, including one that tasted of burnt rubber, to challenge the taste buds. At the end of the evening there were 6 aspiring Jilly Goolden’s or Oz Clarke’s who had correct entries. The Mayor, Ian Townsend, was asked to draw the winner. Sheralyn Hares’ entry was pulled from the bag and she received the prize of a bottle of champagne.

In addition to the wine, a selection of French cheeses with French bread was provided to fuel the conversation. Although there was no prize this time there was also a challenge to identify which regions of France each of the four cheeses came from. While most of the cheeses were household favourites their origins were a surprise to many.

The Twinning Committee was delighted to see so many people, including a number of new faces, at this event and hope that the enthusiasm shown will continue in all future aspects of our twinning activities with Meylan.
